Preparation

 

Use nitrile or latex gloves while preparing and gluing the shoe.

 

• Trim the horse’s hoof as normal.

• Make sure the glue and shoes are warm. 25-30C (75 -85F) - In cold climates a hot box can be used.

• Wire brush the hoof to remove all dirt and dust  - This will enable a better glue bond.

• Course rasp the hoof using downward strokes to rough the surface of the hoof giving special attention to the rear part of the hoof as this has the least gluing surface.

• If wet or damp, dry the hoof using a hot air gun.  -  Most glue failure is due to moisture in the hoof.

• Wire brush the hoof again.

• Check the fit of the GLUSHU including the heel for overreach and adjust where necessary -  It should be a good fit, not loose

• You can adjust the shape of the shoe as you would a normal aluminium horseshoe. -You do not need to shape the shoe exactly to fit the hoof if it is not symmetrical because the glue will take up any difference.

 

You are now ready to fit the shoe

 

• When using Glue-U Shufit Glue, fit the cartridge and plunger into a atandard DIY caulking gun and attach nozzle.

• CRITICAL – EXPRESS THE GLUE UNTIL IT IS BLACK BEFORE YOU APPLY THE GLUE. IT WILL ONLY WORK PROPERLY WHEN IT EXTRUDES BLACK

• Put a medium bead of glue around the inside base of the shoe. Also, put generous beads of glue on the inside surface of the cuff.

• Holding back the side cuffs, slide the shoe onto the hoof, aligning it with the frog and adjust to the correct position, gently pressing the cuff onto the hoof. Do not worry about glue oozing out of the cuff. This can always be rasped off when the glue has set.

• Hold the hoof until the glue has completely set. Approx 5 minutes. The glue will be quicker in warmer temperatures and slower in cooler temperatures - It is very important the glue bond is not broken whilst curing – many farriers use a hoof stand to take the weight of the hoof.  

• You can use a hot air gun to help speed up the process in cold temperatures. When the glue has set, place the hoof on the ground and fill any areas not glued around the edge of the cuff . After the glue has set you can rasp to tidy the look of the shoe.

 

It is advisable t the glue cure for a further 1 hour before riding.

The glue will obtain full strength after 24 hours. 

 

 

 

• Using nippers, cut the metal shoe from the cuff , leaving just the cuff on the hoof wall.

• Using a coarse rasp, remove the remaining cuff, or, using a draw knife, cut the cuff from the hoof using downward strokes along the glue line - This is easy to do and very quick

• DO NOT USE THE BUFFER OR A HAMMER AND CHISEL TO REMOVE THE CUFF. YOUR HORSE WILL NOT THANK YOU

• Remove any remaining glue or cuff with a rasp. 

 

You are now ready to fit another GLUSHU glue on horse shoe.
